Music, like life, is rarely black and white. Like a well-woven tapestry, or a master painting, it swirls with shades of color. Bhairavi, in its various shades, is one of the most beloved and embraced scales in Indian Classical Music.

It is a rare treat, however, to encounter a full performance of its subtleties as it is usually the final piece played in a concert, generally in the form of a dhun. Enjoy this CD as Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan explores the subtleties of Shudh Bhairavi, Bhairavi and Sindhi Bhairavi, taking you on a musical journey that is a rare treat indeed.

Ustadji weaves this gorgeous raga through all its forms, exploring not only the various melodic aspects that make this raga a favorite among music lovers, but also the deft artistry of both Gayaki (vocal) and Tantrakari (instrumental) styles of sitar.

Ustadji’s mastery, and indeed, his oneness with the sitar is on display here as he takes us from lilting meends to powerful gamaks, capped by a wonderful drut gat that provides a glimpse of the staccato stroke, blistering speed, and crystal clarity that is Ustadji’s signature trademark, coming from decades of practice and generations of musical wisdom.

Regardless of how many times you may have heard this raga, you’ve never heard it like this! With a richness of color rarely seen, Shades of Bhairavi is a treat for any music lover!

Shades of Bhairavi is now available on CD through Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan's SPK Academy Store
